Hello

I am having troubles with models imported via Autodesk Inventor 10. When I am in 3D Studio Max 9, I attempt to overlay a diffuse map. I am using surfaces that were completely flat in Inventor, but when applied a diffuse map, instead of applying the map stretched over the entire surface, it makes any image extremely small and ties it. I end up with a checkerboard pattern, while I am just trying to make a diffuse map that spans the entire object.

Can anyone give me some advice? I would really appreciate any help. (PS. I know I can model the same things in 3D Studio, but would not like to spend the time doing so)

Thank you,
JR

Hi JR.

I'm not a 3Ds Max user. I'll forward this onto a friend who is to see if they can help you.

It sounds like a setting to me, but I'm not all that familiar with 3ds max.

JR - sorry for the late reply. One of my former students gave me an answer that will hopefully help you.

Hi Michele,

I have not worked inside of 3DS Max 9 yet but I do know 8, and it sounds like he just needs to add a modifier to the surface area of the mesh to make it stretch out.

Explanation:
~ if he he has not done so right click the object and select convert to than choose convert to editable poly or mesh ~
- click on the Modifier tab (upper right hand corner)
- in the selection tab either select by poly
- select the area you want the map to be add to
- Apply the diffuse map from the material editor (hot key M)
- With the area still selected, add the modifier UVW Map
- now depending on what looks best, inside the parameters area, select either planar or box
- lastly, inside the parameters area, scroll down and select fit or bitmap fit, depending on what looks best.

~ Once this is done you can right-click the modifier UVW Mapping and select collapse to to bake it onto the object OR just leave it as is. ~

If the problem is what I think is going on than this should fix it.

talk with you soon,
